Meaning & History

From the name of any of the various places in England so-called, all derived from Old English eald "old" and cot "cottage, small house". In some cases, a variant of Alcock. A famous bearer of the name was American novelist Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), the writer of the coming-of-age novel 'Little Women'.
